Obituary for Phyllis K. Brown

Mrs. Phyllis K. Brown, 79, of Mahoning Heights passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Luke’s Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital in Lehighton. She was the widow of Edward W. Brown who died on May 15, 2013. They had been married for 49 years.
Born in Weissport she was the daughter of the late Kermit M. and Miriam (Hontz) Kershner. She was a 1957 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and was a member of the reunion committee.
Phyllis retired in December 2000 after working as a secretary for 18 years in the main office of the high school of Lehighton Area School District. Previously, she was a clerk for the Lehighton Blue Ridge Cable TV Office from 1974 to 1982 and was employed by the Lehighton Branch of the Hazleton National Bank from 1957-1974.
She was a volunteer for the Lehighton Meals on Wheels from 2001-2008, was a bowler for 49 years at Cypress Lanes in Lehighton, participated in the Carbon County Senior Games from 2002-2008 winning 42 medals for the Lehighton Team and was a former member of the Civil War Roundtable of Eastern Pennsylvania. Two of her great-grandfathers, Henry Musselman and Josiah Hontz served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Phyllis and Ed enjoyed touring Civil War battlefields, where her ancestors participated, and their favorite vacation trip was to Alaska, which they visited twice.
She is survived by her Brother and Sister-in-Law; Gene E. and Merella Kershner of Weissport, Nephew; Micah John Kershner and cousins.
Memorial Service scheduled for Thursday July 19th has been cancelled, Schaeffer Funeral Home, Lehighton, in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made at www.schaefferfunerals.com.
