Obituary for John Henry Bookholt

John Henry Bookholt, 96, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at The Summit Nursing Center in Lehighton. He was the husband of Loretta ne Heilman for 74 years. Prior to John’s passing, John and Loretta lived at Renee’s Personal Care Home in Palmerton. Born October 7, 1921 in Paterson, NJ he was the son of the late Henry and Margaret Bookholt.
During WW II John joined the Army, after being disabled during the war, he attended the University of Alabama and the University of Pittsburgh. After the war he received a B.A. degree from both Dickinson University and Rutgers University.
John was an elementary school teacher in Dover, New Jersey for several years. In 1961 the family moved to New Ringgold, PA and John started the New Ringgold Furniture Store. John continued to teach in the local school systems and had several temporary state jobs.
He was a long-time member of Zion United Methodist Church in New Ringgold and served on the Borough Council in New Ringgold.
After retiring John and Loretta enjoyed traveling together with family and friends and he also enjoyed reading the newspapers, sitting on the back porch and telling stories. He lived a good life and people will never forget his kind heart.
John is survived by his Wife, Son; John Jr. husband of Barb of FL, two Grandchildren; David husband of Danielle of CA and Andrew of FL, three Great-Grandchildren; Jakob of FL and Brooke and Bailey of CA, several Nieces and Nephews with special appreciation to Mary who has been amazing in her dedication to John and Loretta’s care; Karen, Sam and Eric for yard maintenance and to Ciera another faithful frequent visitor.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 27th at 11AM at Schaeffer Funeral Home 3rd & Alum Streets Lehighton with Reverend Steward Warner officiating, Committal Service with Military Honors, under the direction of the Lehighton UVO to follow at Packerton Cemetery.
