Obituary for Nancy H. Barclay

Nancy Hannah (Neff) Barclay

Nancy was born on February 21, 1944 to Melvin Peter and Florence Rose (Rex) Neff on the family farm in Washington Township, Lehigh County, PA. She passed away on July 24, 2018 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a 1962 graduate of Slatington High School and met her husband of 51 years, Richard Gary Barclay in 1964. They were married on July 22, 1967 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lehighton, PA which became her family church, followed by a honeymoon in Lake George, NY. Nancy continued to work at various factories in Lehighton but her greatest source of pride and joy came from being a homemaker and raising her children, Peter, Jimmy, and Mary. Nancy shared her love of books with her children, reading to them at every opportunity, complete with character voices and sound effects. She happily revived this habit with the arrival of her beloved grandchildren, Hannah, Gavin, and Garth. Nancy was a very generous person. She would do anything for anyone and never expect anything in return. She was a joyful and happy individual, cheerfully sharing her time and humor with whomever she met. She was known to spontaneously burst into song while working around the house and was often heard singing along with the radio, particularly with Elvis. During the holidays, her love of Christmas Carols had her filling the house with music and her voice. She also loved live performances and exposed her children to many local community theater performances as well as high school and church shows. She was a remarkable cook, preparing many home-style meals representing her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Her apple pies and shoo-fly pies were legendary.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Dick, Corporal, Pennsylvania State Police, Ret., her children, Pete Barclay, M.D. (Kate) of York, PA, Jim Barclay, D.D.S (Michele) of York, PA, and Mary Barclay, of NYC, NY, her grandchildren, Hannah, Gavin, and Garth Barclay of York, and many girlfriends, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her twin brother, James Josiah in infancy, her parents, and her brother, Rev. Larry Neff of New Oxford, PA.

Funeral Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Schaeffer Funeral Home, Lehighton, PA is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be made at www.schaefferfunerals.com

Since nothing brought Nancy greater joy than cooking for a table crowded with family and friends, in lieu of flowers, please take the time to gather those dear to you to share a meal together. If a donation is preferred, please consider the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or a charity of your choice.
